Monsteiner Rebweg: Trail in a Nutshell

 

Trail Name: Monsteiner Rebweg

Trail Type: A short distance circuit; well-maintained, partly paved, with stairs in places, good marking on the trail.

Original – 4.8 kilometers/ miles

Extension – 6.4 kilometers/ miles

Trail Description: This circuit covers urban and natural terrain, along a path that has some steep rises, steps and steep descents. Along the way, a number of educational signboards provide information about the local viticultural traditions, and benches provide opportunities to enjoy the magnificent views in comfort.

Trailhead: Berneck-Au, Kirchplatz

Parking:  a large lot at Kirchplatz; half-dozen spots on Kobelstrasse, by the intersection with Bachstrasse.

Rail: Regional Swiss trains connect this town to lakeside towns and Sankt Gallen.

Au: Sonnenstr x Hauptstr, Gaessli-Walzenhauserstr-Mennweg; Buechel: Buechelstr, cut through houses to vines, stairs, Festung/fort; along top of vineyard to Wendler, Oberhaslach: Rotweg, stairs to vines; Restaurant Burg, vines; Hard: Langmoosstr, (See extension*), Hardstr (between buildings; to end of hamlet), footpath to top of Hargetweg, follow above Haslachstr to Walzenhausenstr, stairs to Haslachstr, Teuchelgasse-Walzenhauserstr-Friedhof

(*Extension: Do not turn left between buildings in Hard; instead continue on Langmoosstr to Frohe Aussicht Restaurant to turn left down to treeline/vines, cross creek and continue down to Ruedenstr, footpath to Blattlerstr, then left onto footpath, then 100+ stairs to Eggerweg-Eichholz-Kobelstr-Bachstr- Walzenhauserstr)

Tasting along the Trail:

Berneck and Au both have restaurants; and two restaurants (Burg and Frohe Aussicht) are both directly on the trail.

Berneck has at least 8 wineries open for bottled wine sales and in some cases, a glass or two.

Alternative Options:

Biking: The Rhine Route, stage 4 (approximately 43 kilometers) from Buchs to Sankt Margrethen, passes by these vineyards. It is marked as Swiss bike trail 2, or Eurovelo 15

A lovely two hour hike to do if wanting some elevation while on Lake Constance.
