Casteller Wine Walks: Trail in a Nutshell

Trail Name: Casteller Weinspaziergaenge

Trail Type: One circuit of the outside segments of four shorter wine hiking circuits; gentle inclines on either paved, or hard-packed surface; well maintained and mostly (but not always) marked with the circuit name.

Length(s):

Large Trail: Casteller Weinspaziergaenge: circa 12 kilometers/ 7.5 miles

Segments: (each circuit total)

Greuter Bastel Circuit: 7.6 kilometers/ 4.75 miles

Schlossberg Circuit: 2.3 kilometers/ 1.4 miles

Hohnart Circuit: 2.5 kilometers/ 1.5 miles

Kugelspiel Circuit: 4 kilometers/ 2.5 miles

Convenient to: Kitzingen, Germany

Marking: Varies by circuit name, although “Casteller Weg” follows the outside edges of the inclusive circuit around Castell, and is mostly identical with Casteller Weinspaziergaenge. (See photo above for signage.)

Trail Description: These circuits wander through the named vineyards in Castell and Greuth. Schlossberg (Palace Hill) is the most challenging (albeit still easy) circuit, but the others would be great for people with more limited mobility and those with (sturdy) baby carriages, as the trails are paved (or hard packed), and without too much incline. Ideal for families.

Trailhead: Castell: Schlossplatz (the Fuerstlich Castell’sche Domaenenamt, the domain office for Castell wines) for all trails.

Parking: Castell: Birklingerstr (B286)

Public Transportation Options:

Bus: Not practical for these circuits

Rail: None

Suggested Stages: Not applicable

Trail Itinerary-Reference Points:

Castell: Schlossplatz, Kirchbergstr, Kugelspiel vineyards, cross B286 into Schlossberg vineyards, castle tower on top of hill, Bausch vineyard monument, vineyards between Castell and Greuth; Greuth: Hauptstr, village center, vineyards, return along much the same route; Castell: Hohnart monument, Schlossgarten, Breitestr.
