Fassboden 6: Trail in a Nutshell

 

Trail Name: Fassboden 6

Trail Type: Short distance circuit; almost exclusively paved, the remainder hard-packed earth; well maintained, and fairly well marked.

Length: total: 18 kilometers/ @ 12 miles (1.5 hours)

Trail Description: A short and relatively flat bicycle circuit through the vineyards and villages of the northern part of the Suedliche Weinstrasse. While there is some cycling on the roads, that is only through towns (which are small and usually lightly trafficked), leaving the rest of the circuit on dedicated bicycle path through the countryside.

Marktplatz on Marktstr, Maikammer

Maikammer: Frantzplatz, Kastanienweg

Kirrweiler: In den Forstgarten, Unterried

Edenkoben: off Poststrasse, large lot named Im Letten

Sankt Martin: Am Pfarrgarten (or Friedhof, parking entrance off Totenkopfstr)

Public Transportation Options:

Bus: VRN (Vehrkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar) provides service for the villages.

Rail: DB (Deutsche Bahn) regional train for Edenkoben and Bordmuehle (between Maikammer and Kirrweiler)

Edenkoben: A Wine Museum which covers the history and production of wine in the district.

Tasting along the Trail:

Many wineries, large and small along the way, (as well as wine taverns, and a fest or two).

Alternative Options:

Walking: The Deutsche Weinstrasse Wanderweg, is a long-distance trail, best completed in segments. The section from Edenkoben to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse covers some of the same area as this bicycle circuit. See the Nutshell.

Due to its short length, relative flatness, and amount of dedicated bicycle path, this circuit is ideal for families with younger cyclists.
