Trail Type: Mid-distance circuit on tarmac, grass or hardpacked surfaces; well maintained, and very well marked.

Length: 9.8 kilometers/ 6 miles

Convenient to: Karlsruhe or Baden-Baden, Germany

Marking: Red background, white lettering of the trail name, often on a white metal arrow.

Trail Description: A hike through varied landscapes, but almost always within view of the vines, that cover many of the south-facing slopes in this rather hilly countryside. Rated highly for its natural beauty and scenic vistas, this trail’s highlights include a narrow gorge containing a waterfall, deep forests, and interesting man-made features.

Trailhead: Sasbachwalden, on L86 by the sports fields.

Parking:

By sports fields on L86, an unimproved lot along the road;

On Bergstr, not far from the old mill in the field, an unimproved lot just off the road;

Public Transportation Options:

Rail: Karlsruhe Verkehrsverbund (KVV) local S-Bahn, S4 from Karlsruhe, and regional trains (generally on a north south axis from Baden-Baden to Basel) serve Achern, Sasbachwalden’s nearest rail connection.

Bus: KVV Line 245 from Baden to Mummelsee, and Regionalbus 7123 from Achern, serve Sasbachwalden.

Sasbachwalden: Am Schelzberg, Weingut Schelzberg winery (and a restaurant, “Klosterschaenke”), vineyards, Alde Gott Bildstoecken (lookout point), woods, Murberg, up along Brandbach creek, Bergstrasse/L86-Am Schlossberg, well-defined trail through woods following the waterfall (Gaishoelle) to L86/Bergstr, Spinnerhof (hotel and restaurant), Friedenskapelle St Katharina (chapel), woods, Straubenhoefmuehle (Gasthaus), woods, Auf der Eck (street), by the “Lydia’s Bankl” bench, treeline/vineyard line, Koenigsrainstr, Weingut Koenigsrain, sports fields/tennis court.

Car: Badische Weinstrasse, a 200 kilometer/124-mile car route for wine enthusiasts, begins in Baden-Baden and ends at Weil Am Rhein (on the Swiss border). It roughly follows Highway 3 from north to south.

A moderately challenging trail, due to steepness and stairs in places, this trail is worth the effort because of the fantastic scenery.
