Schilcherkellerweg: Trail in a Nutshell

 

Trail Name:  Schilcherkellerweg (SKW)

Trail Type: A mid-distance circuit trail; fairly well-maintained, partly paved, some grassy or slightly rougher surfaces, and the rest is hard-packed surface; marking on the trail is good, most of the time.

Length:

Total – 10.5 kilometers/6.2 miles

Convenient to: Stainz, Deutschlandsberg, or Graz, Austria

Marking: Signs, or simply marks (on trees or poles) of  blue and yellow horizontal stripes

Trail Description: A pleasant, easy meander through the small spa village of Bad Gams, and into the hills and vineyards above the village.

Bad Gams: Brabeckweg, several places, and a medium-sized lot on Grandlwirt Str

Bad Gams: Brabeckweg, cross Gams stream, take trail left to Furth; Furth: L643/Gersdorfweg, around Maerchensee; downhill through a meadow, Niedergams: Bonstiglweg, Kaiserwirt Weg, past Nymphenweiher, Ofnerweg, past vines and more distant agri-pond, trail through woods to Stockl Weg x Feldbaumstr, trail through fields to Brabeck Weg

Tasting along the Trail:

The occasional winery, restaurants and taverns in Bad Gams, and wine stores and more of the same in the nearby town of Stainz

Alternative Options:

Hiking: Winzerweg, a sign-posted and slightly longer (13 kilometer) circuit trail with more forested terrain, begins and ends in the same place in Bad Gams

Biking: Schilcher Tour Sud, a 40-kilometer circuit tour rated as moderately difficult, officially beginning and ending in Deutschlandsberg, but the circuit passes by a corner of Bad Gams

Comments:

A peaceful, pretty area of Austria, only about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Slovenia and some of its vineyards. But, being rural, open hours and bus schedules are not as liberal as they might be in a town or city, so plan ahead.
