Trail Name: Velo Vinum

Trail type: Short circuit biking circuit; mostly paved, well maintained, albeit not marked

Length: circa 29 km /18 miles

Convenient to: Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Marking: None observed (allegedly a blue arrow on a white background with the words Velo VINUM)

Trail Description: A quiet ride in Luxembourg’s Moselle River Valley area through mostly vineyards and typical wine villages, this trail also passes through and by fields. Views of the river, as well as the hills and deep dales in the hinterland.

Trailhead(s): Ehnen: Musee du Vin (Wine museum) at intersection of Route 10 and Frongass (official)

Parking Possibilities: Ehnen: Opposite the wine museum, in an unpaved lot just off Route 10. Greiveldange: Am Reder, parking lot in front of Caves (watch for some restrictions though) Bech-Kleinmacher: Lot at the intersection of Route 10 and Rue de L’Eglise Remich: near the pool (“piscine”), and elsewhere along Route 10 from Remich to Stadtbredimus, there are several small lots along the river.

Suggested Stages: Shorten route if desired where the route cuts back in on itself in a couple of places. Best bet: the intersection of Strachen/Montee des Vignes outside Greiveldange.

Reference Points on Trail Itinerary: Ehnen: Frongasse to vineyards, pink house; Stierzeberreg explanation board; Greiveldange: Uet-Ouschtergaass-Strachen-Montee des Vignes; Bous: Rue de Luxembourg-Rue Kirchepad (a narrow cobbled path through fields and under Route 2; Erpeldange: Rue de Mondorf-Scheuerberg, continue left at traffic triangle; Wellenstein: picnic area, vineyards above Caves Cooperatives des Vignerons Wellenstein; Bech-Kleinmacher: near Roman temple structure, Op der Kruut-Nidderfeld-R. Nico Klopp-R. de L’Eglise to bike path along the Moselle/Route 10; Remich (along the river); Stadtbredimus: Lauthegaass, chapel, caves, Wengertswee, cemetery, Knupp; Greiveldange: vineyards, Bechelberg-Hamesgaass-Am Reder (Caves Cooperatives des Vignerons Greiveldange)-Neie Wee-Klaus, through vineyards to pink house, and Ehnen.

Restrooms: Remich: along Route 10 (riverside), not far from the pool/”Piscine”

Attractions (along the trail): Ehnen: Musee du Vin Bech-Kleinmacher: -Pseudo-Roman temple: site of a Roman cemetery with explanation boards in French and German (inside), outside there is a swing for two with a great view of several Luxembourg villages, the Moselle, and Germany. -A Poussen Museum: set in a complex of former homes, displays village life a century ago, and has an interesting wine display. Remich: delightful small town with wine bars, mini-golf, a kids’ playground, pool, and historic section.

Tasting along the Trail: Wellenstein: Caves Cooperatives des Vignerons Wellenstein Remich: Caves de St Martin Remich: Pavillon Desom Stadtbredimus: Domaines Vinsmoselle.

Alternative options:

Biking: Part of this route follows the Route de Moselle, a long-distance biking trail along the river.

Comments:

Download the GPS tracks! The alleged signage (caution: similar to the Velo Romanum signage seen along part of this route) was nowhere to be found.

Caution: A 4.5 kilometer section of this route is on a narrow road with hills and curves between Greiveldange and Bous, but it is little travelled by cars.
